
Vella Pola

Vella Pola is a Malabar staple food during Ramadan! It’s soft, light, and airy and is served with coconut milk and mashed banana! It is a must during Ramadan in our place! We eagerly wait for mom to cook vella pola during Ramadan to indulge it!

Many memories and nostalgia are related to every food and season. Now my friends eagerly wait for me to cook the vellapola, so they can also dig in! hehe!
Ingredients
- 1 cup white rice
- 1 levelled tbsp urad dal
- 3/4th cup cooked rice
- 1 or 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp yeast
- salt to taste
- almost 1 cup water
For Coconut Milk
- Thick milk of a coconut
- 2 or 3 ripe bananas
- 2 to 3 tbsp sugar
- a pinch of salt.
Method
- Soak the white rice and urad daal for 4 to 5 hours.
- Grind the rice with the above-mentioned ingredients to a smooth batter.
- Consistency should not be thin. Cover and let it rest for 2 to 3 hrs until the batter doubles in volume.
- In small pola plates or on an idli steamer pour a ladle full of batter by applying oil on the plate and steam it for 10 minutes. Let it cool and then take it out with the help of a spoon.
